Polyhydroxy Acid (PHA)

Polyhydroxy acids (PHAs) are a group of gentle exfoliating acids that are used in skincare. They are similar to alpha hydroxy acids (AHAs) and beta hydroxy acids (BHAs), but they have larger molecules that don't penetrate the skin as deeply. PHAs were first discovered in the 1970s by researchers at the pharmaceutical company NeoStrata.  In Ayurveda, there is no specific mention of PHAs as it is a modern skincare ingredient. However, Ayurveda promotes the use of natural ingredients to improve the health of the skin, which aligns with the use of PHAs in skincare.

Cheat Sheet

Type Ingredients:

Exfoliant, anti-inflammatory, antioxidant

Benefits:

PHAs have several benefits for the skin. They can exfoliate the skin to remove dead skin cells and reveal smoother, brighter skin. They can also help to hydrate and plump the skin by attracting water molecules to the skin’s surface. PHAs are also less irritating than other types of exfoliating acids, making them a good choice for people with sensitive skin. PHAs combat glycation, a process that weakens collagen and elastin in your skin.

Uses

PHAs can be found in a variety of skincare products, including cleansers, toners, masks, and serums. They are often combined with other exfoliating acids or ingredients to create a more effective skincare product.

Contra indications:
One potential side effect of PHAs is mild skin irritation, although this is less common than with other types of exfoliating acids. People with very sensitive skin should still be cautious when using PHA-containing products and should start with a lower concentration to minimize the risk of irritation. Additionally, like all exfoliants, PHAs can make the skin more sensitive to the sun, so it’s important to wear sunscreen when using these products.
